You Are What You Wear

The clothes you have on say a lot about you.
Generally, the first impression a person makes of you
is not based on your physical features, but on the
clothes that you are wearing. People often form
subconscious opinions about your personality,
intelligence, and even your character based on the
way that you dress. The clothes that you choose to
wear can make a lasting impression on the people
you meet and unfortunately the impression that is
made may not be an accurate reflection of the person
that you really are.

You didn't have any control over the nose that you
were born with, but you had complete control over the
outfit you put on this morning. Through your wardrobe,
you have the opportunity to showcase who you are
and control the first impression of you that people
make. The outfit you wear on a first date can greatly
influence the opinion your date has of you.

Deciding what to wear on a first date can be a
frustrating experience. There is an art to carefully
picking out an outfit without it looking like you are trying
too hard to impress your date. If you abide by the
following guidelines, you should send just the right
impression and you can be sure that you don't send
any unintended and erroneous signals about yourself.

Dress for the occasion. It is very important that what
you wear on a first date fits with your plans. A girl that
shows up in an evening dress to a date at the zoo
looks silly, just as a man that wears jeans to the
opera would look completely out of place. If you are
meeting in a casual restaurant, you shouldn't wear
overly formal clothes. If you are meeting in a nicer
establishment, dressy and conservative is
appropriate. If you wear an outfit that doesn't fit with
the venue and plans, your date might think that you
have no understanding of social protocol or even
subconsciously question your intelligence.

One of the biggest mistakes people make in dressing
for a first date is letting fashion get in the way of
common sense. If you think that you might go for a
walk after you eat, think about what kind of shoes are
comfortable to walk in and still look good. Don't forgo
wearing a jacket on a cool day, just because it covers
up your outfit. Remember, it is the small details that
often make the biggest impressions.

Dress for comfort. While you shouldn't take this advice
to the extreme that you show up on your first date in
your pajamas, it is important that you are comfortable
when you meet your date. Don't wear shoes that hurt,
an outfit that is uncomfortably tight, or clothes that
don't fit properly. If your clothes make you feel
miserable you will appear uncomfortable and your
date might mistakenly think that you are unhappy with
the way the date is going. You want to enjoy yourself
on your date, so the last think you need is to be
secretly worried that your shirt is going to come
unbuttoned when you stand up.

It is also not a good idea to drastically change your
style for a first date. Don't wear something you
normally wouldn't wear if will make you feel self-
conscious. Feeling awkward about your clothes could
be misinterpreted that you are feeling awkward about
the entire date.

Dress to impress. Trying to impress your date with
what you wear isn't so much about wearing designer
clothes as it is about making sure that whatever you
wear is clean, neat, and accessorized well. If you
wear a new outfit, make sure it doesn't have the look
of something that has been hanging in a store and
check to make sure you have removed all the tags.
Take time to ensure that your clothes are wrinkle free,
your shoes are not scuffed, and there are no stains or
tears in anything you are wearing.

Dressing to impress also entails making sure that
you pay attention to the little details. Wear a minimal
amount of jewelry. Perhaps you can bring out a little
bit of your personality in the accessories that you
choose. Men can wear a fun tie and ladies can wear a
necklace that reveals bit about them.

The way that you dress on your first date can say a lot
about you. Make sure that the signals your clothes are
sending truly represent the image you want to portray.
